In order to reduce the effects of different quality and quantity of wastewater from health institutions in our country on water resources, the project "Evaluation of Existing Wastewater Disposal Practices of Hospitals in Turkey and Wastewater Management in terms of Patient and Occupational Safety" was initiated in cooperation with TÜBİTAK Environment and Cleaner Production Institute and TÜBİTAK Turkey Industrial Dispatch and Administration Institute (TÜSSİDE) in order to evaluate the current practices in hospitals, determine the formation patterns of all kinds of wastewater from health institutions, and compare the disposal methods determined for wastewater management in terms of patient and occupational safety.
Within the scope of the project, a Common Mind Platform® (CMP) was held on March 8, 2016 under the moderation of TÜBİTAK TÜSSİDE Health Economics and Management (HEM) Unit to determine the biological risk parameters that may be found in hospital wastewater and to analyze the current situation regarding the disposal of wastewater. The workshop was attended by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Ministry of Health, General Directorate of Health Services, public health, clinical microbiology and infection experts from different hospitals operating in our country.
In the first phase of the workshop, the negative aspects of the current situation regarding the disposal of wastewater from health institutions were evaluated and in the second phase, the biological risk parameters that may be found in hospital wastewater were predicted and prioritized, risk comparison of hospital wastewater and domestic wastewater in terms of biological parameters, determination of monitoring parameters and development of recommendations were made.
