Preparation of the National Polar Science Strategy (2023-2035), which started in June 2022 in cooperation with TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center Polar Research Institute (TÜBİTAK MAM KARE) and TÜBİTAK TÜSİDE, which hosts polar science studies under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey and the Ministry of Industry and Technology. The project has come to an end.

The studies in the project started with the current situation analysis and it was aimed to take a picture of the current situation of national and international scientific studies in the polar sciences and to examine the scientific research trends. In this context;

  • A literature review was made,
  • Scientific studies of 12 countries and 9 international scientific platforms/organizations were examined,
  • One-on-one interviews were held with 15 participants from abroad and 47 participants from Turkey,
  • Two workshops were held in Turkey, one of which was online.

In line with suggestions from the ecosystem and literature research;

  • Vision, mission and values statements have been developed.
  • 3 main strategic objectives, 7 policies, 34 action proposals that will cover the national polar science ecosystem, and target proposals have been developed to achieve the objectives.
  • In order to disseminate interdisciplinary studies in polar sciences, separate research themes have been identified for the Arctic and Antarctic Regions.

The presentation prepared by the TÜBİTAK TÜSSIDE project team regarding the scope of the National Polar Science Strategy (2023-2035) document was made by the project coordinator Seda Celep on the first day of the 6th National Polar Sciences Workshop (30 November 2022) and shared with the ecosystem.
